Consultancy Profile

Founded in 1985, Corporate Interlink is a Canberra-based Business/Government relations consultancy which provides professional, independent support on policy and regulatory issues to both Australian  and international businesses in their inter-action with the Australian Government.

Government policy is now a significant and sometimes crucial factor in the successful operation of business activity in Australia. Business often requires a 'corporate interlink' between itself and relevant Departments of Government in order to efficiently pursue its objectives. At a national level, Government policy is formed through the reconciliation of competing interests. Those who understand the process best are those that are on-location, in Canberra, and who have a 'real time' understanding on how to obtain access to, and make the appropriate concept of representation to the relevant players.

No business can afford to be unaware of the processes of Government: in its planning, and policy-making, and in its regulatory and associated administrative arrangements.

  • The Business/Government relations processes of today, and the future, involve a much greater sensitivity and awareness, by both business and Government, of the balance of social and domestic economic and international factors affecting any issue.
  • Political 'idologies' and the roles of pressure group influence, as opposed to persuasive detailed representation which recognises economic and international trade realities, have substantially declined as Governments and businesses are faced with increasingly complex and closely contested options.

'Lobbying', as it used to be practised, has changed from the old concept of 'personal contacts' to a far more professional function of researched and detailed representations to appropriate levels of the Bureaucratic and Parliamentary process. Anticipation of, and reaction to, prospective policy developments in Government - and the ability to use the processes of Government to achieve corporate objectives, are an essential characteristic of a successful business.

The new 'rules of the game' in Business/Government relations, when seeking to achieve the best result for business from Government initiatives, depend more on substance and less on seeking political 'deals' through supposed political influence. Political relationships only provide the broader context. What really matters are ideas, not ideology - soundly based and economically rational arguments, not influence-seeking and special pleading.

Corporate Interlink is therefore not a 'public relations' company in the traditional sense. Rather, it assists businesses in their inter-relationships with Government and its policies -  by providing an in-depth analytical, representational, and consultation role on key Government policy areas and developments which are important to business activities in Australia.

In developing its advice and representation, Corporate Interlink provides both supporting political and economic analysis, and interpretation of Government policy, legislative and regulatory initiatives.

Through its associated consultancy, The Business Planning Group, it can also incorporate the policies and regulatory changes of Government into the planning and management processes of a business.

Our Mission

The professional judgment and advice of Corporate Interlink is absolutely objective. Corporate Interlink has no ideological stance - other than the economic rationalism and market focus of the business sector. The representation of the interests of the business sector to Government, on its policy and regulatory initiatives, is our primary role.
